So I was reading The Ecstasy of Influence today over at Harper’s and it really made me think about plagiarism and it’s direct relationship to the art I have been creating lately. And the best part is that it not only made me feel good about my joy of reworking things but it inspired me to create more! And that is all I can truly ask for.
So I decided to write today (partially because I have MAJOR space issues currently and am sitting on 2 or 3 video projects I can’t even touch without losing hours to deleting music I don’t want to delete). So I took the advice of the article and plagiarized! Not one single line from this peice is mine. I gathered up my books, record sleeves, notecards (none on which I personally wrote), my insurance papers, magazines and pretty much anything with text on it and I began going through them, picking a random page and writing down a line from wherever I pointed my finger. I then would go through the next item and attempt to keep the sentance alive and making sense, but trying my hardest to not conciously direct the sentance.
After a phone conversation with Matt Hanson I have decided I would love to take this idea to the extreme by asking you, my blog reader and friend to write your own and post it as a comment on this blog. I really love the idea of having a collection of multiple text altered by multiple people. With the help of the internet and the creativity of everyone combined (including all of the original artists we are essentially plagiarizing!) I truly believe this project could turn itself into a wonderful book that we would all enjoy reading. I can only hope you agree!
